P90X Day 1 Completed: Chest and Back, Ab Ripper X
I just completed day 1 of the P90X workout!!! Only 89 more days to go :-)! Day 1 was Chest and Back, and the Ab Ripper X.The Chest and Back workout consists of 12 different exercises (lots of pull ups with the the P90X pull up bar, push ups, etc.), with 2 sets of each exercise (you go through all of the exercises once, and then you do it all over again, except in reverse order). The first set wasn’t so bad, but by the time I got to the second set, I was definitely feeling the pain (a good kind of pain). I pushed through it, and I feel like I got a great workout.
When I got to the Ab Ripper X workout, I started running out of energy. The Ab Ripper X consists of 12 different abdominal exercises. I had to pause the P90X DVD a couple of times to take a break. I had some grape juice in the fridge, so I grabbed a cup of that to help keep me going. I definitely felt the burn in my abs throughout the Ab Ripper X. Some of the exercises use your hip flexors, and I definitely felt those burning as well.
By the time I got to the very last exercise (the Mason Twist) I was
exhausted and really glad that I was almost done. The bonus round of 10 extra reps was an exciting surprise. I pushed through them, but it really, really burned!!!
As far as my nutrition for the day, I think I did ok (I could have done better). I had my Coast Guard drills this weekend (I’m in the Coast Guard Reserves) so my breakfast wasn’t all that healthy. I ate eggs, ham, and french toast. The french toast is what I should have avoided. For lunch I ate a peanut butter and jelly sandwich (lots of protein & some natural sugar prior to my workout).
After my workout I had the P90X Recovery Drink, and I’m going to have a protein shake in a few minutes. Tonight will be filled with temptations; we are hosting a “wine and cheese” at our home. I’m planning on having 1 glass of white wine, and some light snacks. I’ll probably also drink a protein shake.
Well, I think day 1 of my P90X workout was very successful. I’ll definitely feel some soreness tomorrow (I already feel sore), but I’m excited for some Plyometrics!

Sounds like you had quite a day 1 workout! I’ve been intrigued by the P90X workout for a while, seems like it came out of no where and many folks are claiming good success with it.
Keep it up, I’m looking forward to seeing some of your results. My workout kick this year has been to create and use a golf fitness workout routine, I’ve been doing well so far, been in the gym almost every day.
Are you tracking your calories burned during these routines?
I appreciate it! I’m very sore from yesterday, but I’m excited for my day 2 P90X workout. Congrats on your golf fitness routine!
No, I’m not tracking my calories burned during these routines.
I appreciate your comment, and keep up the hard work with you’re routine as well!!
Glad your first day felt good for you. I burned myself out half way through because I didn’t realize how intense the workout would be. Plyometrics is Fun and I run daily so plyometrics isn’t so bad for me. It still works me out good though. Have fun.
Thanks! I can definitely see that it could be easy to over do it and burn yourself out with P90X. Especially when the people in the videos are doing 20-30 pull ups at a time. It made me feel like I wasn’t doing enough, but I realize they are at a whole different level of fitness than me. Thanks again!!
Great job! I started P90x yesterday as well! (lean version) I’m bookmarking your blog so I can check in from time to time! My hubby is in the CG and we are up in Alaska.
Good luck!!!
Thanks!! Congrats on your start with P90X too! I have three aunts (and several other relatives) who all went through P90X and they got great results and loved it (that’s how I heard about it).
That’s awesome that your husband’s in the CG! I’m stationed at Little Creek in Norfolk, VA.
Thanks for checking out my blog, and don’t ever hesitate to contact me! Make sure to let me know how you’re doing with P90X and your progress as you go! Have a great day!
I just started Day 1 this morning myself.
I used 10lb dummbells for the lawnmowers, etc.. because I wanted to make sure I took it slow and not go overboard. Will increase to 15′s or 20′s if I want the 8-10 reps versus 15 to 20 I was doing.
My stupid DVD player froze just as I got done with the Mason Twist, so I have no clue what was after that :)
My arms were pretty much fried after the first round of pushups and pullups. ugh.
That’s one of the biggest things I’ve heard when starting P90X is not to push yourself to hard and over do it.
I’m doing the same thing and trying to max out with 8-10 reps to build muscle.
Congrats again on completing day1 !!
Hi again Jonathan!
**CONGRATULATIONS** on your journey, and your first day completed!
I wish you the best luck!
I’m leaving work shortly and heading home to complete my day 16 workout! Wuu huuu!
Lori
Thank you Lori I appreciate it!! I’ll be doing plyometrics here shortly! My hip flexors are really sore but I’m going to push through it.
Congrats to you for getting to Day 16! That seems such a long ways away for me! Thanks again, and keep in touch!
dude, i am extremely scared to start p90x. i haven’t had a workout since varsity basketball which was in Feb of 2007. reading this blog is extremely reassuring but i don’t know if i’ll have the willpower to do it all.
I know you can do it, but you do have to make a commitment to follow through and do P90X if you want to see results! You can’t let excuses get in the way of your daily workouts.
My suggestion is to write down your exact reason for doing P90X..also write down what you want to get out of the program. Sometimes just seeing your reasons for wanting to do P90X and your goals for the program on paper is enough to keep you going. Just post that piece of paper somewhere that you’ll see it everyday. Also, make sure to take the fit test, and take your before pictures. These will help you see all the progress you’re making.
Good luck, and please let me know if I can be of any help! Just make the commitment, and then do your best!!
My husband and I just started the lean program on Monday and this is the longest that we have both lasted without losing momentum. It’s a good sign. We’re finishing day 4 and I’m planning on following your daily posts to keep me motivated. Did you find that during the second week there was a “hump” to get over? That moment where you either stay committed or begin with the excuses? I found the yoga this morning very difficult~ I’m not flexible at all and after 45 minutes, couldn’t stand it anymore. Should I have done cardio after to compensate or just have that as a goal to beat next week? I hope that the questions are ok.
Very inspiring blog. A great find.
leanne
Congrats on your start with P90X!!! No, I actually luckily never hit a “hump” where I either stayed committed or started making excuses. I basically decided prior to day 1 of P90X that it is either now or never. I figured if I didn’t commit to a healthy, exercise driven lifestyle now, than I may never make the change. I also decided to make the change for myself. I wanted to change for myself so I could live a very happy, and long life free from illness and disease. That’s what has kept me going and has kept me from making excuses. I’m sure at some point I’ll make an excuse, and you may too (we’re only human). You’ve just got to remember why you are doing this and who you’re doing it for. Do whatever it takes to get it done because this is about you! Sorry for the really long answer for such a short question! :-)
Yoga was really tough for me starting out too! I was the most inflexible person around! My wife laughed at me when she found out I had to do Yoga. I’ve made a lot of progress since day 1. I can now touch my toes, which I’ve never been able to do!
You should try to do better next week. You should make it a goal to get through the entire DVD next week. It’s a long workout, but you’ll get used to it. Just a little hint..something I do that has helped me get through Yoga. Get a piece of paper or envelope and cut in half (should be pretty small). Then take that piece of paper and put it at the corner of your TV screen so you don’t see the timer during Yoga. I have the old style TV’s so the static holds it in place. You may need to tape it if you have a newer TV. That has helped me to stop focusing on the length of Yoga, how much time is left, and to focus more on the poses and to “live in the moment” as Tony Horton says. I wish I would have done that sooner. It might help you out!
Don’t ever hesitate to post any questions on here! You can never ask to many! Keep me updated on your progress! Leave daily comments if you can if that helps you stick with it!! Keep pushing play! :-)
Hey Jonathan,
Well I'm back! We start round 2 today after an awesome summer off. Hubby went back to work today after 6 months of parental leave ( we get a year off in canada for every child born. We shared it this time) It's a great time to get back into it. We spent the summer eating, drinking, and doing a workout here and there. I'm happy to report that we both only gained 3 pounds since we finished round 1 at the end of June. I guess that the lessons learned are now life long. We are both pumped to start again. This time however, we will be replacing core and cardio X with Insanity workouts. We just need something a bit more challenging. I'll be checking in every few days like last round just to be more accountable. Hope that's ok. Have a great day.
Good job! Sounds like you guys had an awesome summer and you didn't go back to your old ways which is great!
I plan on starting a P90X Insanity hybrid myself. It may be a little while before I start it though (trying to wait until things calm down).
Please do check in and keep me updated on how you are doing! Great job again, and I look forward to hearing about your progress. I hope you have a great day too!
today is my first day of P90x, any sugggestions on diet plans?
Thanks for the comment Isaac. Sorry for the delay in getting back with you…just got back from a week long vacation with my wife.
CONGRATS for starting P90X! How are the workouts going so far?
You should just follow the Nutrition Guide that came with P90X. It is really the best eating plan to follow since it has been specifically designed for the program. Keep pushing play!!
I also started the P90x today even though this post is old lol nm
CONGRATS for starting P90X!! I guess yesterday was P90X day 1 for you? Are you doing the P90X classic version?
A lot of people like to follow along my first round of P90X and leave comments each day to help them to stick with it. You’re welcome to do the same if you want. I hope you have an awesome day and thanks for the comment.
I started my first day today as well and I can hardly type! I still have the Ab Ripper X to go for the day, but I’m pretty much fried, hope it’s not a bad thing that I couldn’t keep up 100% with all the exercises,
lol…Sounds like you got an awesome workout with P90X! It is definitely ok if you can’t do all the P90X exercises at this point. Just do the very best you can during each P90X workout! What kind of goals are you trying to accomplish with the program Vincent?
I’m really just trying to lose some weight I’m 18 and about 185-190 LBS and it’s just time to lose some weight and gain some lean muscles, since the last post I did the ab ripper and that put me in complete soreness when I woke up this morning. I still have plyometrics to go for today. But yeah, so far my first day went well, I do need to get more protein in my diet though, what kind if supplement would you recommended? The P90X one? Thanks
-Vincent
It’s going to be tough Vincent, but just stick with it. If you stick with P90X and follow the nutrition guide you’ll get incredible results and will definitely lose weight while gaining some muscle. You’ll likely be sore all week but just do you best!
I would recommend the P90X Recovery Drink starting out along with some protein-
http://trek2befit.com/go/resultsandrecovery
It’s good stuff and will help reduce some of the muscle soreness and will help you recover from the workouts.
I started the p90x yesterday and it looks intense but I was only able to get through the first half of day one. Was feeling a little nauseous and light headed, plus my muscles were at the failing point. Not sure if its a nutritional/supplementary problem, or if I’m just not accustomed to the system. Is this normal?
If this helps at all, I’m a 5’10″ 150 lb and hoping to gain some form of weight using this. Id like to follow the nutrional guide as much as I can, but I’m a college kid so I don’t always have the time to prep all the food and sometimes don’t have enough to buy the food to the letter. Any advice going forward?
CONGRATS for starting P90X!! As long as you’re eating enough calories and following a high protein, healthy eating plan then you’ll be good. Having your muscles at failing point is definitely a good thing. Just don’t push yourself too hard since you’re just starting out.
As far as any advice, I’d highly recommend you go through my 5 day video series and implement EVERYTHING in the videos (just click the join newsletter link at the top of the page). This will set you up for success.
What kind of goals are you trying to accomplish with the program?
Hi jonathan, i just ordered p90x and waiting for it to come. Hope yr training is going great im a skinny scots lad so will see how it goes after 90 days. I am a wind turbine engineer hopefully will climb up them in a one after 90 days lol.. keep in touch bud. think the wife is going to join me great to get back to dating (lets do p90x ha ha)..
Congrats for ordering P90X!! Get ready, cause CHANGES ARE COMING! :-) Hope you have an awesome weekend and keep me updated!
Hi! i just got my P90X and i read everything and watched the Bring it video. But i am lost because i have no ideal how long i am supposed to do each work out.. Each video is over 50min long and i am starting the lean program in P90X and it starts off with 7 diffident videos in day 1-3 but doesn’t tell me how long to do each video for … Can you help me or tell me who can pleas .. THANK YOU ! AND GOOD LUCK TO YOU!
You’re supposed to push play, and then do the entire workout! :-) There’s a timer on the screen that counts down the workout. You’ll also just want to follow the workout calendar that you can find here-
http://trek2befit.com/p90x-workout-sheets
What kind of goals are you trying to accomplish?
I just finished day 1-Chest & Back-of P90X! Taking a break before I start Ab Ripper X… I took Tony’s advice of “pace yourself” during the first round – I did as many reps until I felt like I reached the first of the final 3 reps before failure. On the second round I took it all the way, and I feel like I got a really good workout today. I’ll have a protein shake after ab ripper and hopefully get my daily nutrition routine in order by next week. No doubt plyo’s going to be tough for me tomorrow.
Congrats!!! You’ll probably feel some soreness today! I did that workout yesterday myself and I definitely feel it! :-) Just do the best you can with Plyo!!! BRING IT!
Just did my first day of P90x coming off my second round of insanity! Its definitely a different kinda tired ha its nice. I can’t wait to attack plyo tomorrow!! Happy Holidays everyone!!
CONGRATS for starting P90X! Keep us updated on your workouts, and most importantly….BRING IT!
Here I am again at day 1 jaja. I swear I wanted to do the workout but with my family and my girl everyday it was impossible. I took a 3 weeks rest (much more than suggested I guess) so im starting again cause I’m not in a hurry. Still wanted to comment because I will buy the bowflex adjustable dumbells. I bought the resistance bands from bb. But I dont really feel them good on the workout, sometimes they are to hard or to soft and even with 3 bands I cantjust balance the right weight, so im starting with those for me to really bring it like I like to. So in a week probably i’ll get them and will be here posting.
Another thing, I saw the p90x 2 mail that you started a challenge. I reaaly wanted to givee it a try but I think i’ll just wait, maybe finishing this one you’ll do one for p90x. You are my coach in bb, but I cannot see any posts about your challenge, I wanted to read them just to be informed about the program. Good luck and read you next week :)
Congrats for re-starting P90X! Hey, it happens, and the only thing you can do is push forward. Yea I personally prefer the dumb bells over the resistance bands, but some people are the opposite and love the resistance bands.
Our P90X2 group is a private Facebook group so you won’t be able to see them at BB. Are we friends on Facebook already? If not, you’re more then welcome to add me. Just let me know who you are in the friend request so I put the pieces together.
Just finished DAY 1. very intense!!! i love it though!
GREAT JOB Sean!!!! KEEP pushing play no matter what and keep us updated!
I completed P90X day 1 yesterday. I could not finish the whole DVD (about 20 mins left of the exercise) My muscles were to the point where i just could not even do one more pull up or push up and i started feeling a bit nauseous. I also did not finish the Ab Ripper X which made me feel like a wimp. At the end of the day I did my best and forgot the rest.
I did however forget that I have a pause button. It might come in handy for Plyometrics tonight. Any advise?
PS: Great blog by the way :)
Thanks! It sounds like you did your best….and that’s ALL that matters. Just do the same with Plyometrics and all of the other workouts. With time, if you continue to give 100%, you’ll build up your strength and you’ll get better at the workouts. KEEP pushing play! Also, keep us updated on your workouts!
Thanks for the motivation Jonathan! I just finished the Plyo and I was actually surprised that I could finish the whole workout. Don’t get me wrong, It was a tough one but I found it a lot “easier” than the chest and back. Well tomorrow it’s shoulders and arms and i am a bit worried as my arms are still hurting a little from the chest and back. But like Tony Horton says, keep pushing play. Once again, thank you so much for being such an inspiration to us all!! I will try to update here as often as possible.
No problem! Just do your best and forget the rest! Awesome job with Plyo…that just means you can push yourself even HARDER next time! :-) Keep us updated on your workouts!
I’m so excited I found your blog :o) I start “day 1″ tonight! lord help me
Good! :-) CONGRATS for starting P90X! Have you seen this page?
http://trek2befit.com/how-to-start-p90x
Let us know how it goes!!
I just finished Day 1 myself. I’m worried that I’m not strong enough to do this, as I couldn’t keep up with Tony at all. I also can’t do any pull-ups, so I tried using the chair, but it kept sliding out from under me. Oh geez lol… Did good on the nutrition though!
As Tony Horton says- Just do your best and forget the rest! Really take that to heart Cody and do the very best you can. If you’re always giving 100% and doing what you can, then you WILL get stronger and eventually you’ll be able to do the pull ups. BRING IT!
