P90X Day 10 Completed: P90X Shoulders and Arms, Ab Ripper X
I just completed day 10 of my P90X workout!! Now I’ve only got 80 more days to go! Today was Shoulders and Arms and Ab Ripper X. It was a great workout and my arms, shoulders, and abs are exhausted!
I was finally able to find a storeĀ that had the plates I needed for my dumbbells (Dick’s Sporting Goods; I should have gone there first). So today I increased my weight on most of the exercises by 10 pounds. Towards the end of the workout I had to go back down to my original weight, but I pushed harder today and I got a great workout.
After P90X Shoulders and Arms, I did Ab Ripper X with my wife so I had to make sure to bring it! We are both super competitive with each other so I couldn’t let her show me up! I had to pause the P90X DVD like usual, but I was able to get through the entire Fiffer Scissor exercise without stopping! I also was able to get through all 50 reps of the Mason Twist. My wife of course had to show off and one up me during the Mason Twist. She held a 5 lb. plate during the entire exercise. Ok, I’ll admit it. She kicked my butt this time.
Nutrition for today-
Breakfast: Bowl of Fiber One cereal, and a protein shake.
Mid-Morning: Protein shake.
Lunch: Peanut butter & jelly sandwich (I used all natural peanut butter) Also had a protein shake.
Mid-Afternoon: Berry Smoothie with 1 cup of frozen rasberries, blueberries, & blackberries, 1 tablespoon of ground flaxseed, 1 scoop of protein powder, and skim milk (not sure how much, just filled up the cup).
Dinner: A shrimp taco with black beans, shrimp (with mojito lime taco seasoning), lettuce, tomatoes, and shredded cheese (not a lot) on whole wheat soft taco shell.
After-Dinner: Protein shake.
Also, after my P90X workout I had a protein shake. I can’t wait for my P90X Recovery drink to come in! It really does seem to help me recover faster from the workouts and it tastes great.
Well, I’m off to watch The Biggest Loser! My wife LOVES the show and she got me into it. It’s a really great show and will definitely help keep you motivated. For everyone who is doing P90X, great work and keep pushing play!!

Sounds like you rocked it out today. Nice job.
I went ahead and did the workout today. Surprisingly the muscles that were worked seemed to completely avoid my problem area for the most part. So I was able to get through the DVD without much incident. This seems to be one of the easier DVD’s at least for me, mentally anyways.
Had to take a break before Ab-ripper, off to do that now.
Thanks! That’s great that you were able to get through the P90X DVD! Legs & Back is tomorrow, so hopefully by then your back will be back to normal. It wasn’t a bad workout for me either, and I really enjoyed it.
Great job again for pushing through it! Today is Yoga and I’m not all that excited about it…
Yoga isn’t my favorite either and not necessarily because of difficulty. The moves are just slow and monotonous. And it’s a half hour longer than the other DVD’s. It’s hard to put aside that much time in my day. It has to be done though I guess.
That picture with the fifer scissors is great. I’m sure my face looks exactly the same if not worse during that exercise. Congrats on getting through that without stopping. I still struggle so hard with that.
Oh and I meant to tell you the other day. I looked through that beach body coach information. I just don’t think I have the time for yet another responsibility right now. Even though it really doesnt take that much time.
The last time I did Yoga, I found myself starring at the timer the whole time. It’s pretty long, but like you said it something that has to be done.
Yea, that picture was taken on the first day I did Ab Ripper X. I still make those faces though. Maybe I should listen to Tony Horton more and take that energy from my face and bring it to the muscles I’m working (easier said then done).
No problem about the Beachbody Coach thing! Yea, it doesn’t take that much time, but I know what you mean! When I told my wife I was going to do it, she said I had too much on my plate already and I shouldn’t do it. I’m stubborn and I did it anyways, and it actually hasn’t been bad at all. My friends around me are getting pumped about P90X.
I might try taking my lapdown into the workout room and watching a movie or something as I do the Yoga. Maybe help take my mind off the timer a bit.
That’s a good idea! I might try that.
Wow, I cannot do all the fiffer scissors. That’s one of the hardest ones for me. That whole routine kicks by butt, but I can tell I’m slowly getting stronger.
The short break I took prior to doing the fifer scissors and my wife doing the exercises beside me really helped push me through them (I can’t let her do better than me)! She still showed me up though :) I still can’t get through the entire Ab Ripper X without taking short breaks. We will get there!!!
During the fiffer scissors, can you get your legs to point toward the sky, or are they 45 degrees like mine?
Also, congrats on all the mason twists. Do you have your legs hanging in the air when you do them.
I found if I let my heels lightly touch the ground, I can stay “upright” for longer, but I am not yet advanced enough to stay suspended and continue all the mason twists.
I screwed up this morning. I thought it was Yoga X, so I slept in a bit and planned on doing it this evening. Well, I didn’t realize it was shoulders and arms LOL, so I will do that tonight.
I can get to about 50-60 degrees now. I’ve been doing a ton of stretching outside of P90X to help with the exercises. Also whenever I do them, as Tony Horton says to do, I try to “fight” to get my leg straight. I’m very inflexible, but I have definitely seen some improvements.
Yesterday with the Mason Twist I had my legs hanging in the air (not very high though). That was the first day that I was able to get keep my legs up and get through all 50 reps without stopping. Previously I did have my heels touching the ground. I of course took a short break prior to starting. Taking the break helped me get through it, but over time I hope to phase out the breaks.
Also, what weights are you lifting.
I did 10lbs last time more for conditioning my body, but I will either up it to 15 or 20lbs. Maybe even more if I consider the 8-10 rep mentality.
I am not at a point where I know whether to stick with high reps or go low…argh decisions decisions.
I started at 25 lbs, but then towards then end I had to go back to 20 and even 15 (my original weight) for a few of the exercises.
Yea, it really depends on what your goal is for P90X. Mine is to build muscle, so I’ve been trying to max out with 8-10 reps. You’ll figure it out!!!
Weird, I tried posting 2 comments earlier…they didn’t show up.
I goofed this morning..I thought it was Yoga X day, so I slept in because I knew I was giogn to do Yoga in the evening. Whoops, got my days mixed up :)
So when I get home tonight, I will be doing shoulders and arms.
What weight are you using for dumbbells? I used 10lb weights last time for conditioning, but will up them to 20′s possibly.
Your posts ended up going straight to my spam folder. I was getting a ton of spam for some reason so I made some tweaks to my settings so I’m sure that’s why. I think I fixed it now.
That’s a good idea to push yourself to higher weights. You can always go back down if you need to.
Yea, I’ve got Yoga X today. I hope I get through it as quickly as possible! :)
Hey Jonathan,
I am on day 3 of my third week…so what is that? Day15? I have arms/shoulders tonight. I have a question for you, well two actually…One, how did you get all these P90X ads on your site? Two, do you ever allow yourself a “cheat”? Like one day out of two weeks or something, will you eat anything not P90X prescribed?
That sounds about right! I’m actually a Beachbody Coach so I help others get fit through P90X and other Beachbody products (while getting fit myself). It’s a really great program and as a Coach I get 25% off all the products. Don’t hesitate to call or email me with questions about it or if you’d like to join. More info can be found here- Beachbody Coach info
Regarding allowing myself a “cheat;” I’ve sort of done that. For me, when I eat at home, it is very easy to stick with the P90X diet because all my wife and I buy is healthy food. But when we go outside of our home and eat such as at our friends’ homes, families’ homes, at restaurants, etc. it is sometimes difficult to stick with the diet because of limited choices. In those situations, I just do the best I can & try to make the right food choices. When there is only junk food available, then I eat within reason, and basically use that as a cheat.
For the 2-3 months prior to P90X my wife and I got on the Abs Diet (by David Zinczenko) and that really helped set us up for P90X. The diet requires you to have at least one cheat meal a week (within reason of course). It was a great diet and is very easy to stick to. It’s extremely similar to the P90X diet.
That really is cool you “prepared” yourself a couple months in advance eating right and working out.
Good for you.
Thanks! I was extremely out of shape, and I don’t think I would have gotten through P90X without doing that. When I initially started I wasn’t planning on doing P90X, but then I decided it’d be a great program to really take things to the next level.
Day 10 is now done. Getting up at 5am is getting easier. It’s nice knowing that my workout is out of the way and that I can be tired at the end of the day and not worry about it too much. Did a 5km run tonight and am seeing some good improvements. Yoga tomorrow morning. I’m gonna bring it!
Nice!! Keep it up! I really give you a lot of credit for getting up at 5am to get your workout done! That shows that you are committed to getting fit and your doing what it takes to get the job done! Great job again!!
Day 10 shoulders, arms and ab ripper x complete! …1/10th of the program completed…
Whew, it’s late and I’m worn out. I really got a good workout overall. I still had enough energy through ab ripper to do 10 extra roll-up/v-ups and add 50 incline crunches and 60 back extentions on my roman chair! I think I’m going to continue to add back extensions to my ab ripper exercises – I feel like if I strengthen my lower back I can make it through my workday without sitting down (my boss hates it when I take breaks).
Thanks for the info on the cheap heartrate monitor, I’m going to look into buying one – and also yoga blocks – tomorrow before my yoga regimen.
GREAT job Matt! Dang, way to BRING IT after Ab Ripper X! You could always try doing Ab Ripper X TWO times (back to back) if you need more. Have a good one and keep pushing play!
Hmm… I could… but if I was to do Ab Ripper twice I would end up skipping fifer scissors through pulse ups – just sayin’.
