P90X Shoulders and Arms

P90X Shoulders and Arms (I'm stirring She-Crab Soup)

I just completed day 3 of my P90X workout! Today was Shoulders and Arms, and Ab Ripper X. The Shoulders and Arms workout consists of 15 different exercises, with 2 sets of each exercise. You are using dumbbells, and a chair during this workout.

The P90X Shoulders and Arms workout was really tough, but I feel like I did pretty good for my first time. I had to pause the P90X DVD a few times though to practice some of the moves (without any weight) to make sure I had them down. I’m definitely a lot stronger in my biceps than my shoulders, because as the workout went on (about halfway through), I was struggling to complete the shoulder exercises.

I’m looking to build muscle, so my target reps were 8-10 for the exercises (with the exception of the exercises where Tony wants you to do 16 reps). For the majority of the bicep exercises I was able to reach the target range, but for a majority of the shoulder exercises I wasn’t able to reach the target range. I think next time, I’m going to decrease the weight for the shoulder exercises, and increase the weight for the bicep exercises (I’m going to have to make a trip to the store to buy more plates for my dumbbells).

The Ab Ripper X workout was extremely hard today. My hip flexors and my abs were still sore from P90X day 1. I had to pause the P90X DVD many times to take a break. Even though the Ab Ripper X is only 15 minutes, it was a very long, painful 15 minutes. I was really glad to get to the Mason Twist and finish the workout (of course I had to pause it prior to the Mason Twist to take a break).

As far as my nutrition for the day, I feel like I did somewhat better. For breakfast I had a bowl of Fiber One cereal and a protein shake (just like yesterday).  For lunch I had a turkey, egg (I used Eggbeaters), & cheese sandwich (on high fiber, whole wheat bread), and I had a protein shake. About mid-afternoon I had another protein shake.

After my P90X Shoulders and Arms workout I had the P90X Recovery drink, and then I ate dinner. For dinner I had salmon (I pan fried it using extra virgin olive oil) with a salad. My salad was made of romaine lettuce, extra virgin olive oil & balsamic vinegar, shredded cheese, and bacon bits (hey, I know bacon bits aren’t that healthy, but they are better than real bacon :-)).

Lastly, I did the Ab Ripper X, and I have a protein shake sitting on my desk as I type. I didn’t incorporate any fruit today like I wanted, so I’ll try to do that tomorrow.

Tomorrow is P90X Yoga X and I’m a scared!!! A hour and a half plus of yoga doesn’t sound all that fun (I’m not very flexible)!!!

  1. I love it that you and I are exactly on the same schedule as newbies and updating our blogs. Because we seem to be having problems with many of the same things.

I would get rid of that cheese on your salad :) That is one thign I am beginning to limit is my cheese intake.

I have also been soda free for like 8 months, which I am proud of.

    • Yea, it has definitely been tough this week! Nice update! Same here, I’ve been soda for for a little while now (probably about 3 months now). I used to LOVE drinking some good ole’ Coca-Cola.

      • Soda free for two days!!…and I’m a couple of days behind you in the program. I like to read your blog to know what I have to look foward too.

        • Congrats Jessie!! Keep up the good work! Thanks for reading my blog. You can subscribe to my P90X blog my clicking here to get updates by email. Please don’t ever hesitate to contact me if I can help you out in any way!

  2. Day 3 is now done and it's amazing how quickly we've gotten back into the p90x routine. Hubby did his routine with a buddy at the work gym. He's put all of the weight workouts onto his Ipod and does it that way. Super proud that he's gone from massive couch potato to this. Amazing! Tomorrow is yoga and I'm looking forward to it. Have a good one.

    • My brother in law who is in the Marines did that (he put the videos on his Ipod or mp4 player). Sounds like you're husband has made some permanent lifestyle changes (the both of you have done that), so congrats!!! I haven't done Yoga X in awhile. I may end up doing that on Saturday instead of what I had planned so I can relax and stretch out my muscles.

      Keep up the great work!

  3. Tonight will be my day 3 of p90x with my finance. My ribs are still sore form ab ripper x and my thighs form the second workout. But we are so motivated and excited for this lifestyle change. We are no strangers to working out but these tapes are more intense and I love that about them! Im def nervous for yoga tomorrow!!

    • CONGRATS Melissa for committing to P90X! Yea you will be VERY sore over the next few weeks as you go through the P90X workouts. As you’ll hear Tony Horton say a lot, just do your best and forget the rest! Really take that to heart. What kind or results are you trying to get with P90X?

My wife and I have Yoga X today as well! Go through the entire DVD and do what you can. Keep me updated on your progress with P90X!

  4. i finished my day 3 of p90x and i have to tell you something, i wasnt able to get up this morning to go to work; i couldn’t walk without bending (i was walking like a duck). It was really painful, and if you add that my arms were really sore for day 1 you can imagine how bad i was. I thought about giving myself a rest day because it was hurting too much. After visiting some websites i found out that its normal and had to keep pushing play and i did :) i feel so great about it and im pretty sure i can finish the program without skipping any workout. As i am cooling down the sorrness is coming back so im back in pain till my warm up and stretch tomorrow. I hate it…but i love it!!! :)

    • CONGRATS for starting P90X! It sounds like you got a great workout :-), but you may have pushed yourself a little too hard. Don’t be afraid to hold back a little bit over the first few weeks so you can start learning your limits. You don’t want to push yourself too hard so that you’re so sore you can’t do the workouts (or worse yet, injure yourself). The P90X Recovery Drink was a life saver for me in getting through those first few weeks.

What kind of goals are you trying to accomplish with P90X Edy?

  5. I tried p90x about a year ago and quit 2 weeks later and i think that gave me an idea of the program exercises. Im doing just the basics for now, not pushing to hard, even did plyo with the modified way so i couls keep up with fuel. Good thing is that after the warmup and stretch i dindt feel much pain so i made all the exercises without even pushing to failure and that makes me happy.my goal is to mantain the same weight and just get ripped. im taking supplements as c4, to get a boost for the workout and a recovery drink for after workout. I feel pretty great today and less sore than yesterday (at least i can work normally jaja) and eager to have my yoga x tonight :)

    • Good!! Sounds like you’re BRING IT, so great job buddy! Keep me updated on your workouts and let us know how this first full week goes for you.

  6. I definitely feel soreness from yesterday’s plyo – it feels great! Just finished shoulders & arms, my arms are shot from that exercise. I was surprised to find myself lifting 30lbs through the first 3 shoulder exercises (on the repeat rounds, too!). I’m going to be sore all over tomorrow, I hope yoga x doesn’t kick me too hard… I’ll do my best (and forget the rest), though.
I was really craving a cola earlier, but I got a glass of water instead. That actually worked for a few hours… to settle my craving I did something a little drastic, I got a handful of M&M’s. Perhaps I’ll plug in the treadmill later as some sort of punishment..
Alright, on to Ab Ripper to complete today’s initial goal!

    • Good! 30 pounds during Shoulders and Arms and this is your first time doing P90X? That’s impressive, so great job!

Maybe try getting some flavored water, or even if all else some soda that has 0 calories, 0 carbs, etc.? Even though the diet soda still isn’t good for you, it’s probably a better option then M & M’s! :-) Do your best and forget the rest during yoga!

  7. I love these workouts! ha Ab Ripper was brutal today (I’m still sore from day one) I’m looking forward to yoga, I’ve gotta stretch out these muscles ha

    • Good! lol…It will be a week full of soreness, but just do your best and forget the rest! X Stretch will feel awesome! Keep pushing play Phil and keep us updated on your progress! BRING IT!
