P90X Insanity HybridOk, so I’ve finally made my decision on what I’m going to do when I finish my second round of the P90X workout. I decided that I’m going to do a P90X Insanity hybrid. After doing almost 180 days of P90X, I really need some type of change and I need to step up the intensity in my cardio workouts. I love the resistance workouts in P90X, so I figured combining P90X and Insanity would be the next best step for me.

I created a P90X Insanity Hybrid schedule and I wanted to share it with everyone. Below is my schedule for the next 90 days-

Weeks 1 through 3

Sunday- Chest & Back, Ab Ripper X
Monday-  Plyometric Cardio Circuit
Tuesday- Shoulders & Arms, Ab Ripper X
Wednesday- Pure Cardio
Thursday- Legs & Back, Ab Ripper X
Friday- Cardio Power & Resistance
Saturday- Yoga X or Rest Day

Week 4 (Recovery Week)

Sunday- Yoga X
Monday-  Core Synergistics
Tuesday- Kenpo X or Kenpo X Plus
Wednesday- Core Cardio & Balance
Thursday- Core Synergistics
Friday- Yoga X
Saturday- Rest or X Stretch

Weeks 5 through 7

Sunday- Chest, Shoulders & Triceps, Ab Ripper X
Monday-  Max Interval Plyometrics
Tuesday- Back & Biceps, Ab Ripper X
Wednesday- Max Cardio Conditioning
Thursday- Legs & Back, Ab Ripper X
Friday- Cardio Power & Resistance
Saturday- Yoga X or Rest Day

Week 8 (Recovery Week)- Same as Above

Weeks 9 and 11

Sunday- Chest & Back, Ab Ripper X
Monday-  Max Interval Plyometrics
Tuesday- Shoulders & Arms, Ab Ripper X
Wednesday- Max Interval Circuit
Thursday- Legs & Back, Ab Ripper X
Friday- Max Cardio Conditioning
Saturday- Yoga X or Rest Day

Weeks 10 and 12

Sunday- Chest, Shoulders & Triceps, Ab Ripper X
Monday-  Max Interval Plyometrics
Tuesday- Back & Biceps, Ab Ripper X
Wednesday- Max Cardio Conditioning
Thursday- Legs & Back, Ab Ripper X
Friday- Cardio Power & Resistance
Saturday- Yoga X or Rest Day

Week 13 (Recovery Week)- Same as Above

This is the schedule that I “plan” on doing. When I actually start doing it, I may tweak it along the way. I know in the beginning I will probably replace Ab Ripper X with Cardio Abs and/or Insane Abs to try them out.  Whichever one is the hardest for me to do, I’ll probably stick with that so I get a better workout. Also, I may throw in some P90X Plus workouts, and P90X One on One workouts in the mix as I go along.

There are a million different combination’s of P90X Insanity Hybrid schedules, so feel free to make your own or tweak mine to make it work for you.

I’m really excited now that I have an actual plan on what I’m going to do after this round of P90X!

  1. Jonathan, Thank you for posting this, after I finish my second round of P90X and my first of Insanity (should be next Spring) I am looking at doing a hybrid. I will be looking forward to seeing what tweaks you make.

    • My pleasure! Yea, I'll definitely make sure to update this post with my changes or I might just make a new post on the updates. I'm excited to start it!

  2. Just curious, how do you use Insane Abs?? I try to play the thing and it jumps from exercise to exercise with no time to actually get into position and actually DO the exercise. I get the same thing with the Sports Training DVD. I have checked with my Beachbody coach and was directed to the BB website for customer service. MY problem is that I bought the program from Craig’slist and they won’t help if you don’t buy direct from them.

    • I haven’t started my P90X Insanity hybrid yet, so I haven’t done the Insane Abs workout yet. I’m hoping in the next 3 weeks or so I’ll be able to start it.

If you’re not at a point where you know all of the exercises so you can get into position immediately after the previous exercise finishes, then just keep your remote control nearby and pause it if you have to so you can into position. It’s definitely ok to do that. Overtime as you learn the moves, you’ll find that you’ll need that pause button less and less.

    • probably bought an illegal copy that someone has cloned

      • Yea the illegal copies of P90X are worthless. The people that go that route are the people who usually never finish the program or even start it.

  3. I started the P90X – Insanity Hybrid schedule posted here on 1/1/2011. This is my first week and so far I love it. I completed P90X early December 2010 so I took a break through the holidays.

I was wondering if anyone else has done this schedule and how things went for them.

    John in San Antonio, TX

    • Thanks for the comment John! I’m actually about to start this on Sunday! My wife and I are finishing up Insanity on Saturday and we are going to jump right into things and do the P90X Insanity Hybrid. I may tweak things along the way but I will generally be following this schedule. Have a GREAT day and don’t hesitate to let me know if you have any questions or if I can help in any way!

  4. So how has this turned out? You should be about two weeks into this.

My only concern would be doing pushups (which I hate) on consecutive days. Aren’t there a lot of pushups Plyo Cardio Circuit which you have the day after Chest&Back? It would be nice to have a schedule that spreads out strength exercises.

    • Thanks for the comment David! We are now into week 3 of our P90X Insanity Hybrid. There are some push ups in the Plyometric Cardio Circuit, but there aren’t a ton so it isn’t bad. If when I’m doing that workout my chest and back muscles are extremely sore (from P90X Chest & Back on the day prior), then I just go into Child’s Pose during that exercise. On Monday though, I just pushed through them…

To be frank, if you hate push ups, then that’s even more reason to do them! I used to absolutely hate the P90X Legs & Back workout, because my legs were my weakness….I stuck with it and I focused on my legs more to help build up their strength. I’d say they aren’t my weakness anymore and I don’t hate that workout anymore. Just do your best and stick with it!

Overall this workout is going great and we are really enjoying it!

By the way are you doing P90X right now?

  5. Could you make a P90X/P90X Plus/Insanity hybrid and post it on here?
All of the others I’ve seen online were no good.

    • Thanks for the comment Ian. I’ve never really thought of putting together a P90X/P90X Plus/Insanity hybrid like that. It would probably be really interesting and pretty cool. If I do end up putting one together I’ll most definitely post it here on my blog. Have you done all 3 programs yourself? What’s got you looking for more?

  6. Brilliant schedule. What would be a good alternative for legs & back workout though??

    • Thanks buddy! Why do you ask for an alternative to the P90X Legs & Back workout? If you get the P90X One One DVD’s there’s likely a good solid lower body workout in there that you could replace with P90X Legs and Back.

  7. Man what a great motivational story. I’m right there with ya, pale, skinny, lazy and unhealthy. This def makes me wanna hit the play button again.

Any suggestions on getting started? I have both Insanity and P90X but after a few tries of a few vids. I feel that my body just isn’t ment for anything this badass.

Could really use some tips for getttin started. If ya got time, I would appreciate the help

  8. i started this work out yesterday, im really sore any pointers to help this out, whats best to lose fat and gain mucle

    • Here’s a blog post I made on how to reduce muscle soreness-
      http://trek2befit.com/relieve-muscle-soreness

As far as losing fat and gaining muscle it all comes down to give 100% to your workouts and sticking with it, as well as following the nutrition guide.

  9. Im a coach too and going to follow this hybrid schedule, starting today! Any ideas on nutrition plan for the hybrid?

    • If I were you I’d just continue following the P90X nutrition guide. Good luck and keep pushing play!

  10. Hi! I’ve done a few weeks of p90X and also Insanity before thinking, this is all the same everyday, and I’m bored. (Too much of Tony can get annoying too!). One thing though, the results even after a few weeks were really impressive on both programs, but I feel there wasn’t the right mix for me.

SO…..I’m jumping straight into your hybrid program. It’ll be the perfect blend of strength, conditioning and flexibility. I might alter it a bit when I’m really tired or sore, and do a X stretch or Yoga X to rest that day. i think your hybrid has a good mix though, and i can’t wait.

Really looking forward to it, thanks to you for this page.

    • No problem buddy! I’m really glad it’s helped! Yea you’ve got to do what works for you and whatever keep you excited and keeps you pushing play! So I think that is great what you’re doing! Keep me updated and let me know how it goes!

  11. Not a big fan of Kenpo X, prefer the Kenpo X Plus, nor do I like Yoga X due to its length, but I’m interested in the new Yoga in P90X2 as it’s supposed to be shorter.

Here’s a blog with a less intense hybrid schedule, basically 4 days a week plus a day for abs:
    http://insanityp90xhybrids.blogspot.com/

    • Yea I’m super pumped for P90X2! Having the Yoga be shorter is a huge plus!

  12. Hi jonathan,
I’m curious to find out how you felt about the results you got wth your hybrid schedule schedule postd above. How did you enjoy the scheduke? Would you change anything? Like rearranging the days or doing different workouts instead?
    thanks!

    • I ended up not finishing my P90X Insanity hybrid above (this was back in the summer). I think I made it to month 2 and then there were 2-3 weeks that I wasn’t consistent so I went back to P90X and went through that to get back on track. I really enjoyed it and at this point wouldn’t change anything at this point. Are you planning on going through it?

      • I was thinking about it. Im on week 3 of p90x lean (scared to do plyo because of weak ankles and previous injury). Cardio x is too easy though. I was hoping to sub in something more challenging that didn’t require lots of jumping. Would any insanity workouts be ok, or do they all contain mostly plyo movements?

        • Got it. A lot of the workouts do have plyo moves within Insanity so not sure if that would be good for your ankle.

Before you jump into Insanity you may just want to try P90X Plyo and modify where you have to (and listen to your body). They make sure to do modified moves of all the exercises in case you have knee issues (which is diff then ankle issues, but I’d still give it a try if were you).

Let me know what you end up doing Kay!

  13. Hi Jonathan! I came up with your blog when looking for info and real results on Insanity….I just got it and thinking about it!!! :) Got to admit, I’m a bit scared or intimidated. Not at a fitness level girl…so do you think it will be hard for a person just starting to exercise? I need to lose about 30lbs and been doing Zumba for quite a long time and it has worked but the results are not quick. I also started the 30 day Shred by Jillian Michaels but I really want nice results! How were your results and what about your wife…is it as they say??? is it true? and why finish the program and start another one? just curious!!! is it because it is not as they say??? Thank you for this blog!!!

    • Congrats for getting Insanity! You just need to be in the proper mindset going into Insanity. It’s going to literally be the hardest workouts that you’ve ever done, but you just have to do the very best that you can and not worry about anything else. You have to remember that as you stick with it you WILL get better and stronger with time. So if you struggle during the workouts, who cares…as long as you’re doing your best, that’s ALL that matters!

Insanity wasn’t designed for beginners, BUT if you’re in the proper mindset as I just mentioned you can get through it. People continue doing Insanity after their first 60 days or move onto other fitness program, because being fit and healthy isn’t just a 60 day thing. If you want to stay fit & healthy, you’ve always got to be exercising. Does that answer your question?

  14. Yes it does!!!!! Thank you!!!!

  15. Which one did you do first? and do you have a picture of the before and after of the first one you did??

    • No problem! I did P90X first. You can see my results here – P90X Results

  16. jonathan – you da man!! I ran into the exact same problems and started to incorporate insanity cardio into the p90x resistance workouts. nicely done – I’ll the spread the word!

    • Thanks for the kind words buddy! Hope you have a GREAT day and KEEP PUSHING PLAY!

  17. thanks for this workout schedule. I am in my final 2 weeks of the hybrid, and my goal was to gain muscle/weight with it. However I see that I lost weight even by upping my caloric intake. About 1-2 pounds.
Does this mean I lost mass? I guess I am a hard gainer since I have done 1 yr of P90x but stayed the same weight until the hybrid.

    Thanks so much

    • No problem! Do you have any fat to lose? You could be losing some fat, but you could also be losing muscle. Have you been taking your body measurements? You can always re-take them to see if your inches are going up or down. You may need to up your calories even more.

      • Great! Measurements for arms, chest, legs are the same. Must half been some fat somewhere then. I take about 160g protein in supplements outside of my meals daily, and started at 146 lbs. Now about 144 lbs with 1 week of workout and one week of recovery left.

I really appreciate the hybrid you put together and insanity cardio is something intense! Going to hit the big 40 is months away and I have never been so exhausted until the insanity stuff.

        • Cool! No problem buddy! KEEP pushing play!
