P90X or Insanity
P90X or Insanity? That is a question I get a lot! People ask me if they should start with P90X or Insanity, or they ask if I like P90X or Insanity better. They both sound like easy questions, but they actually aren’t cut and dry questions. It depends on a number of things if you should start with P90X or Insanity, and it’s really hard to say which program I like better since they are two completely different programs. It’s kind of like comparing apples to bananas.
So I’m going to jump right into things and start with the first question…
Should I do P90X or Insanity?
First, let’s talk about Insanity…
If you are just getting back into fitness and it has been years since you’ve worked out (be honest about your fitness level) or you just aren’t in that great of shape, I will always say that you should start with P90X. Insanity is NOT for beginners! While it is an AWESOME fitness program, it is an ultra intense program that is focused on cardio and jump training to help with your endurance, strength, and speed (it’s GREAT for conditioning). During some of the workouts you’ll be burning over 1,000 calories! As you can imagine, to get that kind of calorie burn you’ll have to do some very intense and quick moves.
The awesome thing about Insanity is that you don’t need any equipment at all. You use your body weight as the resistance. So as you may have figured out, if you are trying to add muscle mass, Insanity isn’t the program for you. Another thing that I like about Insanity is that it is 60 days in length (versus P90X which is 90 days). Once you get past the first week of the program, the days seem to fly by and before you know it you are finished the program.

Next, let’s talk about P90X…
P90X is where it all begin for me. It’s the first Beachbody fitness program that I did and I got incredible results with it (check out my results here- P90X Results). P90X is a fitness program that is designed to get you into the best possible shape in 90 days. Despite P90X being an extreme fitness program, it’s a program that almost anyone is able to do. It comes with 3 different workout schedules that you can follow depending on your fitness level and what goals you are trying to accomplish.
P90X has a great mixture of resistance training and cardio. It is really a program for anyone, whether you are trying to lose weight, trying to get cut and ripped, trying to gain muscle mass, or just trying to get toned. What most people do and what I did, is I did P90X first, and now I am going to do a P90X Insanity hybrid. That is where I’ll be doing P90X, but I will be replacing the cardio workouts in P90X with Insanity workouts. That will help spice things up and will really give me the best of both worlds- the intense resistance training in P90X, and the ultra intense cardio workouts in Insanity.

So do I Like P90X or Insanity better?
As I mentioned earlier and as you know now after reading through this post, they are two completely different programs so it’s really hard to say if I like one or the other better. Insanity is more focused on the cardio, and P90X leans towards the resistance training but does incorporate some good cardio workouts. I truly love BOTH programs and by combining the two programs (to create a P90X Insanity Hybrid) I will get the best of both worlds.
If you are still unsure if you should do P90X or Insanity first, I would say start with P90X. It’s a great full body workout program and you can’t go wrong with it. So go ahead and TAKE ACTION NOW! Hi! Nice site you’ve got here! Congrats on the transformation! I have both P90X and INSANITY but never got to do P90X because I lack equipments so I can’t do all the workouts. I am currently doing INSANITY and just finished my 1st week. You don’t need any equipments for the workout program, just your body and the commitment & discipline. Hope I get good results too by the end of the workout program! Keep it up! God bless!
Thanks for the kind words! Insanity is an awesome program…Just stick with it and do your best! If you are continually pushing yourself during each of your workouts, you will get better with time. If you have any questions, need advice, etc. please don’t hesitate to let me know. Keep pushing play!
I’m two days into the last week of my first P90X cycle, but instead of Insanity, I’m going with P90X+.
Increased muscle mass is my primary goal, so I’m sticking with the weights until I get there.
Insanity is in my future, although some would argue I’m already there. ;-)
Congrats for getting to the last week of P90X Don!!! GREAT JOB!! Yea it is definitely tough if not impossible to gain mass with Insanity since it is a cardio based program. Are you going to be following the P90X Plus Program or are you going to just do P90X, but throw in the P90X+ workouts in the mix?
lol…then I guess you’ll HAVE to do Insanity at some point and then you can move into Insanity Asylum (the sequel to Insanity). Have a good one and please continue to keep me updated on your progress.
Thanks, Jonathan. I’m a believer.
I finish my first cycle Saturday, then I’ll probably do a week or two of recovery with some Yoga X, X Stretch and some hotel gym weights. I’m on the road the first couple of weeks of May, but after that, I’ll likely mix it up.
Sounds like you’ve planned it all out, which is definitely a good thing! Stick with it! Have a great evening!
I’ve done P90X 3 separate times and I’m currently in month 4 of Insanity. Insanity is definitely a better overall workout. The core strength I have now because of Insanity I never had with P90X. P90X is not even that hard compared to Insanity. Bring it!
NICE job Dave! Great job for sticking with the programs! What kind of results have you seen with P90X and Insanity so far?
Also, what kind of goals do you have at this point?
lol…Insanity is crazy hard compared to P90X when it comes to cardio. KEEP pushing play buddy!!!
Hey
I’m a basketball player and I have great shooting but when it comes to running I’m not the best. I would also like to work on my vertical and my legs. Which one is best for me, P90X or Insanity?
It sounds like you’re looking to focus on cardio, and plyometrics. So in that case I’d recommend Insanity.
Hiya~
I have a bad knee, and I’m trying to figure out if I should do P90X or Insanity?
Can anyone give me some feedback?
If you have a bad knee…then P90X all the way. Insanity is a super HIGH impact program.
(Sorry I left this out of my last post)
Basically, I was wondering if either P90X or Insanity would be better for me based on your experience. Let me know your thoughts!
Jonathan…For some reason I can’t find your last post that you’re talking about. Where did you leave it? Or feel free to give me a quick summary of your situation.
Hmmm. I don’t know where it is either haha!
Basically, I was wanting to get your opinion about which fitness program would be better suited for me. I’m 15 years old, a sophomore, and a basketball player. I’m 5’5 inches, and weigh just about 103 pounds (I’m pretty small, so I’m wanting to pack on a little bit of muscle). The basketball season is about to end, so I was looking for an off season fitness program to get in good shape for the next season.
In your opinion, which do you think would be better suited for me: P90X or Insanity. I have some dumbbells and a pull up bar, so that’s not a problem for P90X. I’m considering P90X because it’ll build some muscle, and I’m considering Insanity for conditioning and general explosiveness. In short, if I get P90X, would it build muscle AND make me conditioned? And if I got Insanity, would I get conditioned AND build muscle? (If I got Insanity, I would probably get the deluxe dvd’s for the upper body workout, but it depends.)
Sorry for the long post, but I figured I’d give you as much info as I could.
Thanks!
With Insanity you won’t build a lot of muscle since it’s a cardio based program. I’d say go with P90X. You’ll be able to add muscle, and you will get some good conditioning. Obviously not as good as Insanity, but you’ll get the muscle that you want. Eventually you could always get Insanity and combine the 2 programs to get the best of both worlds. Hope that helps buddy!
Hey There Jonathan, Im 22 years old now and I recently gained about 4 inches of belly fat and lets just say Im in pretty damn bad shape. I used to be in amazing shape, and was pretty built, but I have let myself go. I started day 1 of P90x and I have yet to buy the resistance cables or the pull up bar so I did miss out a few of the work outs for day one. All in all, I want to get a killer body with muscle, not just to tone up and get skinnier. Also, my diet habit is horrid, because I am Indian and much like the typical stereotype, its alot of oil and curry on a daily basis. Do you have any suggestions, I would greatly appreciate it.
Congrats for starting P90X! Yes, you’ve gotta get the nutrition down. Also, get the equipment so you can get the most of the workouts. Lastly, check out this post for step by step how to get going the right way-

Hey Jonathan…My name is Amber I’m a mother of two (I just had my son in November 2011)…I’m 25 years old…5’10 and weigh 175…I’m pretty out of shape and I’m trying to get rid of this baby fat…I’m not that active because as you can imagine I have a crazy schedule so I don’t have the time but I do want to get in shape so I am going to dedicate myself to one of these programs but I can’t decided whats best for me…I want to lose atleast 40 pounds but I would like to add a little muscle too…my hubby to be is supporting me big time and is even willing to do it along with me…so in your opinion which program do you think would fit me best…
Congrats for committing to change! So it sounds like it’s been quite sometime since you’ve worked out? If so, then I’m definitely leaning more towards P90X since you’ll be able to do modified versions of the moves if needed to make it work for you. That’s a great program to start out with. What program are you leaning towards?
I am in horrible shape so i am getting insanity but i am intending to get P90X later after insanity because i heard that you have to lose the fat before you can build any serious muscle. do you think that this is a good idea
Check out all the comments on the page Daniel…I don’t recommend Insanity to beginners especially if you’re in horrible shape. Your best bet is to start P90X. And yes, you can definitely lose fat with P90X and focus on burning that fat first (which I recommend).
thanks man i appreciate it.
Hello Johnathan thank you so much for the info :) I am a 19 year old that weighs 190 pounds and i am barely done with my first month of weight lifting. I think i am overweight, but i do have determination. I’m getting in shape for the Marines or Navy (Most likely Navy) and i just did a day of cardio recovery and it was awesome. Some people told me to do a week of cardio recovery first before i do the actual scheduled exercises. What do you recommend?
I know you recommend p90x first, but i want to try Insanity first and push myself. After i do Insanity i plan on doing p90x. I just want to be lean what do you recommend? Also should i keep my weight lifting schedule? It’s from Mon-Wends dumbells mostly more reps less weight.
My pleasure buddy! So you’re going to start Insanity soon? That’s a great program for staying lean. It won’t be easy, but will give you killer results if you stick with it. During the program I’d say to just focus on your Insanity workouts and don’t do anything on top of them. Otherwise you risk overdoing it. Hope that helps!
Thanks and yes i just started it yesterday :D I did just dumbbells yesterday after my Insanity workout in the morning do you think that is okay? I just did alot of reps and less weight like 25′s.
Awesome! Yea that’s fine! KEEP pushing play!
I’m 5’10 and weigh roughly 165. I was wondering what would be the best program for me. I work out every once in a while(enough where i can still say i am in shape), but i have horrible stamina. For example i can barely run two miles and afterwards i can do nothing else that day. i have friends that can run 5 miles and still be ready for more. i want to know which program would help me really get in to all round shape. Not just better stamina i also want to increase pull ups, sit ups, push ups, etc. What would be the best direction ti take. Sorry if this post was to long.
I’d say to start with P90X…Then once you go through P90X you could always jump onto Insanity down the road if you want (or do an Insanity hybrid).
I am looking for the best program to lose weight without gaining much muscle. Which is better?
You can do P90X so you don’t gain muscle (and just get toned), or you could do Insanity. Insanity is cardio based so it’d be super tough to gain muscle. Hope that helps.
Im trying to figure out which workout will be best for me. I have been playing basketball all my life but two years ago I had a baby and have not worked out much since then. I just want to lose about 30lbs and be in shape. Which will be best for me? More then anything I want to lose the belly fat.
If it’s been awhile since you’ve really worked out, then you can go wrong with P90X. Are you leaning towards one or the other?
Hey jon i just started insanity this week it seems like its gonna be intense, i workout probably 4 days a week and a play flag football fro about 3 hours a week on sat so i look muscular but when i take my shirt off my waist is definitely not what i want to look like so im look for some hardcore tone and lean is insanity the right choice im 29 and also should i tone down my workout while doing insanity
Congrats for starting Insanity! Yea Insanity will definitely give you the results. DIG DEEP!
Cool thanks and do you think i should tone done the workout from 4 days a week?
Hi Jonathan, i am Alex im 25 5’11 and 220lb i want to get tone and in the best shape i can, i go to the beach every other day and try to keep a diet however i dont see any fast or great results. I dont have any equioment but im willing to buy, do you think i should try p90x firts then if i can take that jump to insanity? Do both programs have a diet or Nutritional guides? And about how mitch space do i need in my house to do the programs?
Yea I’d start with P90X, and then you can move on to Insanity if you want to. They both come with Nutrition Guides. You don’t need a lot of space. A typical living room will work. Hope that helps buddy!
I just Orderd insanity yesterday I have never done p90x did I make a bad move?? I’m trying to lose lot of weight! I also go to the gym 4to 5 times a week does that make me a beginner?
If you go to the gym pretty regularly, then Insanity might be fine for you. Just go into it with the mindset that you are going to do the very best that you can. Take breaks when you need to and then jump right back in.
Thanyou so much!
Hello! I really liked your web and its helping me with deciding which one to go to! Im 5’6 and 178lbs. I want to lose 50+lbs in a really short time but to get toned and good muscles by new year!
I work out on and off but I dont consider my self fit but I’d like to get quick results and I’ll be dedicated to working out!
Which one do u think I should go for? Insanity or p90x
PS: im a female…
Thank you :-)
You need to really look at how your workout…If you workout consistently and push yourself during your workouts, then you could probably go either way. If not, then go for P90X.
I had reconstructive surgery for a TORN ACL/MENISCUS in DEC 2011. I go to the gym 4 to 5 times a week. Im satisfied with the mass ive gained but its real hard for me to lose this body fat. I guess that would be my goal for now. Which program would you recommend to me.
