5 Ways To Relieve Muscle Soreness

relieve muscle sorenessHow can I relieve muscle soreness? I can barely walk!? Have you ever woken up the morning after doing your P90X workout or from doing some other insane workout and thought that? If you haven’t, you will likely at some point in the future if you’re following some type of workout program (if you’re not following a workout program, I just gave you a big slap on the back of your head :-)). So here are some tips and suggestions on how to relieve muscle soreness

Tips To Relieve Muscle Soreness

1. Get A Massage. Give the muscles that are sore a nice, gentle massage. This will help to reduce muscle stiffness and should relieve some of the muscle soreness. This is a great excuse reason to give your spouse so that they have to give you massage so that you feel better. :-)

2. Stretch It Out. Whenever I’m super sore, stretching out my sore muscles tends to provide some relief. You can’t go wrong with stretching, so spend 5-10 minutes stretching out your sore muscles.

3. Give It Rest & Time. Now this is an obvious one, but some people do tend to over look this simple technique (including myself). If you’re muscles are extremely sore, then let them rest and give them time to repair. That doesn’t mean skipping your workout for the day though. Modify the exercises in your workout if you have to so you’re letting your muscles that are sore rest. You can also always ease back some during your workout so you don’t over do it.

4. Take An Ice Bath. This doesn’t seem like a very pleasurable way to relieve muscle soreness, but it is something a lot of people have success with (this is something a lot of athletes do). I myself have taken a cold shower (versus a bath) and it did seem to help relieve muscle pain.

5. Take An Anti-Inflammatory. I’m not a big fan of popping pills, but this is an option (and an option I’ve had to use). If you are so sore that you are in constant pain when you move, then consider taking an anti-inflammatory like ibuprofen. This will help to relieve muscle soreness and stiffness so you can go about your day as pain free as possible.

WARNING – Tips To Relieve Muscle Soreness

As you probably know I’m not a medical doctor so when in doubt, always speak with your doctor. If you feel something strange that you’ve never felt before, or just don’t feel right then go see your doctor! It’s better to be safe then sorry!

Bonus Tip #6 – Tips To Relieve Muscle Soreness

If you’re not using a recovery drink immediately AFTER your workouts, then you really ought to consider doing so. While this won’t completely prevent muscle soreness, it will greatly help to reduce your muscle soreness. There have been studies done that actually show and prove that by having the proper nutrition within the 1st hour of a workout you will greatly increase your body’s ability to recover. The recovery drink that I highly recommend is the P90X Recovery Formula. It’s what I personally use after my workouts. It really seems to help and it tastes awesome!
