Power 90 vs P90X! I get a lot of questions from people asking me which program is better and what program they should start with. I’ll first get the “which program is better” question out of the way. When it comes to Power 90 vs P90X I don’t think either one is better than the other. They are both awesome fitness programs done by the same fitness trainer, Tony Horton. The important question that you should be concerned with and that really matters in the Power 90 vs P90X debate is which program should YOU do.

I’m first going to go into an overview of each fitness program, and then I’ll give you 3 simple questions to ask yourself that will help you determine which program is right for you.

Overview of Power 90 – Power 90 vs P90X

Power 90 is an in home fitness program “boot camp” that is designed to help people lose weight, get toned or to just get fit in only 90 days. This program is the predecessor to the P90X program and is more for beginners or for people just getting back into fitness. It’s a very simple program to follow that targets specific muscle groups during each workout to turn your body into a fat burning furnace.

The program starts out with fairly easy cardio and strength moves and the workouts are about 30 minutes a day in the beginning. As the program progresses, the difficulty of the workouts increase, and the length of the workouts increase as well (up to about 45 minutes).

Power 90 Pros – Power 90 vs P90X

  • It’s a great program for anyone who wants to lose weight, get fit, or get toned, but who maybe are not quite ready for an extreme fitness program like P90X.
  • It’s a great program for people who don’t have a lot of time to devote to their workouts. The workouts are 30 minutes up to 45 minutes.
  • The program doesn’t require a lot of equipment. All you need are a set of dumbbells OR a set of resistance bands.
  • This is a very inexpensive fitness program.

Power 90 Cons – Power 90 vs P90X

  • It might be a little too easy for people who’ve been working out for a while (using heavier dumbbells will help to solve this issue).
  • This workout program was produced quite awhile ago, which is obvious from the set and animations used during the program. This however has no effect on the actual exercises or the level or workout you’ll get.

Overview of P90X – Power 90 vs P90X

P90X is also an in home fitness program that was created for anyone looking to lose weight, get toned, to gain muscle or to just get fit and healthy in 90 days. This program was created as a result of a lot of people getting awesome results from Power 90 and wanting MORE! Thus, P90X (Power 90 Extreme) was born to give those people an extreme version to move onto. It is a pretty straight forward program to follow and it comes with 3 different versions for you to follow depending on your fitness level and goals. Also, like Power 90, the workouts are designed to target specific muscle groups so that you work your entire body and you become a fat burning machine.

P90X Pros – Power 90 vs P90X

  • This is an awesome program for individuals looking to lose weight, get toned, build muscle and bulk up, or to just get fit and healthy.
  • It’s a proven, extreme fitness program designed to give people the best possible results in only 90 days (it being extreme could be considered a Con).
  • Tony Horton really makes the workouts fun and excited to do each day (that’s a personal opinion of mine, but one that a lot of people share).
  • The program comes with 3 different workout schedules for you to follow depending on your fitness goals and level of fitness.

P90X Cons – Power 90 vs P90X

  • This program does require more equipment and thus more of an investment on your part (get the complete equipment list here – P90X Equipment).
  • Since this is an extreme program, the workouts are longer. The amount of time you spend working out on most days will typically be around 1 hour to 1 hour and 15 minutes (there is one day though that you’ll be working out for 1 hour and 30 minutes).
  • It’s a little more expensive than the Power 90 program.

Which Program Should YOU Do – Power 90 vs P90X

Power 90 vs P90X Self Assessment To Determine Which Program Is Right For You

To help you figure out what program is right for you, Power 90 vs P90X, just answer the 3 questions below with an HONEST yes or no (please ignore the answer that your ego gives you :-)).

  1. Would you consider yourself to be a beginner when it comes to working out and eating healthy?
  2. Has it been over 1 year since you’ve consistently worked out?
  3. If you were tasked to do the hardest workout program that you’ve ever in your life before, would you likely end up quitting if your muscles were sore just about every day for the first few weeks (are you mentally prepared for an extreme program)?

If you answered YES to any or all of the questions above, then you should likely just start with Power 90.

If you still aren’t sure what program to do when it comes to Power 90 vs P90X, then it’s time that you find out exactly what fitness level you are at. So go ahead and devote 30 to 45 minutes to taking the P90X Fit Test.
