Today we’re talking about the Rumble Roller, which sounds like the name of a vehicle from a Mad Max movie but is actually the latest tool for recovery being promoted in P90X2. If you are like me you thoroughly enjoyed getting your butt kicked by the original P90X. It was a home workout like no other, but the people have spoken and they’ve demanded even more.

With P90X2 everything gets ramped up to a crazy degree, and a crazier workout demands a more intense attention to recovery. The folks at Beachbody really want to emphasize the improved lifestyle that results from their programs and ensuring a quick recovery and preventing injury is a much bigger part of this new system than before.

In P90X we had the X Stretch module, a great way to loosen up and keep your body from forcing you to hobble around for days after your workout. With P90X a simple stretch routine wasn’t enough to compensate for the incredible workouts you’ll be putting yourself through.

Enter the “Rumble Roller“…

So What The Heck Is A Rumble Roller?

If you think the name is strange, wait until you actually see the thing. You’ve probably seen those foam tubes at a gym or at a physical therapists office that look a lot like those water noodles kids hit each other with in their pools.

Designed to aid with Myofascial Release, many people complain that, while somewhat effective, they just don’t get as deep as they should to push past muscle fascia to massage and break up the knots that form in your muscles from the intense workouts you’re doing.

The Rumble Roller is the answer to this problem. Hard bumps running up and down work to dig into all the little points you didn’t know you had and really aid in recovery and preventing injury. It looks like a foam tube that hit the gym, took some steroids, joined a motorcycle gang, and beat up some kid who was happily playing with his water noodle in the pool.

Rumble Roller

Rumble Roller

P90X2 embraces the Rumble Roller wholeheartedly, and you’ll be using it at least twice a week as part of your recovery and mobility workouts. The roller is firmly embedded in the course structure of the series, and you’ll be really missing out on the recovery if you don’t have one.

Is The Rumble Roller Really Worth The Cost?

While some people express concern at the added cost, a quick look at the benefits should be enough to convince you that this isn’t just a workout tool like an extra set of weights or a pull-up bar. This is a massage therapist and physical therapist rolled into one. You will use this thing forever, whether you’re sore because of a workout, a long run, or just from carrying your kid around all day.

One thing to be aware of is if you aren’t used to using the Rumble Roller (or even the smooth ones for that matter), they may be a bit uncomfortable at first. The key is to just roll yourself to the point it starts being uncomfortable and then focus on relaxing and your breathing. You’ll soon feel the knots loosening and then you can start applying more and more pressure as needed.

If you’re someone who’s just getting back into working out, it might be difficult to jump right in to an intense program like P90X2. After breaks from my hard regime I always make the mistake of going too hard on my first day back, and end up sore for about four days afterwards. This is counterproductive because it ruins your momentum.

With the Rumble Roller you’ll wake up the next day feeling amazing and ready to take on day two of your training.

No Pain, No Gain! :-)

For those of you who are fitness fanatics, you might be like me and find Yoga and stretching to just be a bit boring. Well nothing adds excitement to the recovery and flexibility part of your overall fitness like pain! Think of it as exercise for your will and push those bumps in a little harder!

Learning about the Rumble Roller made me realize something important. I tend to put a lot more emphasis on my workout than my recovery, simply because the workout is the hard part. The pushing, the sweating, the pain, the achievements – they’re a high better than any other. Thinking about recovery just seems…boring.

But take a step back and think, not just about working out and sweating, but your whole life. You push yourself like you do because you want to forge a better version of yourself. You want to be stronger and faster than you were yesterday.

The creators of P90X2 understand all of this, but they also know that demanding more requires more focus on recovery and healing so that the benefits of the workout aren’t limited to a checkmark in a calendar. To truly carry that new found strength around in your daily life, recovery must be a big focus.

Thankfully we have the Rumble Roller to dig in and keep us always ready for more. So go ahead and buy your own Rumble Roller now…

P90X P90X2 Hybrid

P90X P90X2 Hybrid

In this post I wanted to share with you my P90X P90X2 hybrid schedule that I’ve put together.

I just finished P90X2 about 2 weeks ago and I immediately jumped into my custom P90X P90X2 hybrid. After finishing Phase 2 of P90X2, I knew this would be an awesome combination. I’m excited to finally be sharing it with you!

Why A P90X P90X2 Hybrid?

So really quickly, why would you want to do a P90X P90X2 hybrid?

For me personally, I want to continue adding some size. By combining the strength Phase of P90X2, with the original P90X workouts I think we’ve got a super challenging, but fun workout that will help dudes, and even dudettes like me who want to add more size.

Also, if you’re not looking to add size, then that doesn’t mean the P90X P90x2 Hybrid isn’t for you. That just means you’ll want to use lighter weight, and do higher reps.

If you’re looking to bulk up like me, then you’ll want to focus on doing 8 to 10 reps with heavier weight. Once you can do 10 reps, then it’s time to heavy up the weight. I may even start going up once I can do 8 reps.

My P90X P90X2 hybrid is really for anyone looking for a new challenge and who want to continue seeing changes. Doing the same workout schedule can get monotonous and boring.

Change is the SPICE of life as Tony Horton likes to say! :-)

Recovery Time – P90X P90x2 Hybrid

As you check out the schedule, make sure to read through page 3 carefully. I decided that I’d keep the recovery time just like in P90X2 where it’s up you on when you take some time to let your body recover. I really love that about P90X2.

It’s a much more flexible schedule and takes more into account that we all have different bodies and therefore, when and how long we need the recovery time is different. I did put in there though that as a general rule of thumb, it’s good to take some recovery time every 3 to 6 weeks.

You Going To Do The P90X P90X2 Hybrid Schedule?

I’m already at week 3 in my P90X P90X2 hybrid and I’m lovin it! It’s awesome to be back to the original P90X workouts, but at the same time I’m getting excited to jump back into the P90X2 strength workouts!

If you plan on doing my P90X P90X2 hybrid schedule or are already doing it, make sure to leave a comment below.

I look forward to hearing how it’s going for you or what you think of my P90X P90X2 hybrid!

Things were sort of turned upside down recently due to a medical issue that popped up with my wife so I wasn’t able to get this out sooner. So, I’m happy to finally let you know that P90X2 round 1 is OFFICIALLY DONE!

I ended up finishing my first ever round of P90X2 last Thursday. On that last day of P90X2, I ended up doing TWO workouts that day (P.A.P. Upper, and P.A.P. Lower) since my wife was having surgery on Friday. She thought I was crazy for doing that, but I was determined to do whatever I had to do to get that last workout in.

So what kind of results did I see? Was OPERATION X2 HULK a success or failure? Well, you’re just going to have to keep reading to find out!

A Few P90X2 Before & After Pics

First, I want show you my before before picture (no that’s not a typo) from before starting my fitness & health journey-

Next, here’s a pic of me BEFORE starting P90X2 (the quality of the picture kind of sucks, so sorry about that)-

So not so bad. I’ve slimmed up, and have somewhat of a six pack going on. Prior to starting I had somewhat neglected my nutrition so I was excited to get everything back in line with P90X2.

And finally, here’s just a few of my P90X2 AFTER Pics-

Final Measurements?

Unfortunately, due to all the craziness I haven’t had time to re-take my final measurements or to even re-take the fit test. However, as you can see above I’m pretty sure I saw some positive changes. :-)

My core/abs look and feel stronger then they have ever felt before. Having the most chiseled, cut six pack is something that I’m always striving for, and with P90X2 I’ve been able to take things to a whole new level.

Was OPERATION X2 HULK A Success Or Failure?

My mission for P90X2 was to add size (see my OPERATION X2 HULK post here), and by looking at my pics it definitely looks like I’ve increased my muscle mass. I definitely didn’t add as much as I had hoped too, but I knew going in that it was going to be a tough mission to accomplish since-

1) it was my first time doing P90X2,
2) Phase 1 & Phase 3 weren’t all that conducive to doing adding size, and
3) this was my first true attempt at bulking up.

So this round of P90X2 was an awesome journey of me learning my body and how it reacts to different daily calorie levels.

My goal was to gain at least 10 to 15 pounds of pure muscle…

and I’m happy to say that I gained 8.40 pounds of pure muscle.

Even though I didn’t gain at least 10 pounds of muscle, I did get very, very close to my goal, and I now know what I need to do to gain more! :-)

So I say OPERATION X2 HULK was a SUCCESS!

What’s Next After P90X2?

Immediately after I finished P90X2, I started a P90X2 P90X hybrid. I’m almost a full week into the hybrid and I’m LOVIN it!

Stay tuned because I’ll be sharing with you the schedule I’ve put together so you can join me if you want. Hopefully I’ll be able to get that out the beginning of next week.

Tony Horton & Me

I finally got a hold of the recording of the private call we had with Tony Horton (the MAN himself behind P90X), and Carl Daikeler the CEO of Team Beachbody (this guy made it ALL possible).

I’ve gotta admit, this has got to be one of the biggest highlights of me being a Beachbody Coach so far (the top highlight just being the fact that I get to spend my days changing lives AND getting paid to do so…doesn’t get any better then that in my book). After the call I just couldn’t stop smiling for days! :-) Go ahead and take the time the listen to this call now. I know you’ll get something out of it that will help you on your journey…

Carl Daikeler & Me

Carl Daikeler & Me

During the call you’ll discover-

  • Does Tony Horton have cheat meals (the answer might surprise you)?
  • What happens when you get injured? Should you stop working out?
  • What are Tony Horton’s & Carl Daikeler’s top 2 favorite life changing books?
  • What is Tony Horton’s & Carl Daikeler’s favorite exercise?
  • And lots more…

So go ahead and grab a healthy snack, sit back, and press play…

Wow. It’s crazy how fast time is flying by! I’m coming to the end of week 2 of Phase 2 of P90X2! I wanted to give everyone a quick update on my journey and I want to hear how YOUR journey is going too!

So a big question a lot of people have been asking me is…

What do I think of the P90X Phase 2 workouts?

The simple answer is…

I love them!

The P90X2 Phase 2 schedule and workouts are very similar to the original P90X except they are P90X squared! In other words, there are tons of new moves that are VERY challenging, but a lot of fun!

I especially love the variety of pull ups that you’re doing in P90X2. I never knew you could do so many things on a pull up bar! :-) One of my all time favorites is the Lever pull up. It’s pretty tough to describe but it’s super challenging, but really fun at the same time. I’ll have to get a video of me doing the Lever pull ups to show you.

Another challenging move is appropriately named-

The Impossible/Possible (from the P90X2 Chest + Back + Balance workout)

During this move your legs are on a stability ball and your arms are on 1 medicine ball (in a push up position). Your goal is to stay on the balls and do as many push ups as you can (while maintaining good form). Here’s an image from the P90X One On One Series where Tony Horton is doing the move-

P90X2 Impossible Possible

Ummmm. Yea….

I could do ZERO of those the first time I tried that move, and this week I was able to do 1 rep with perfect form! :-)

As hard as that move is, I LOVE the challenge! Not all of the moves in Phase 2 of P90X2 are THAT challenging, but Tony Horton has sprinkled in moves like that here and there.

So in a nutshell, I’m LOVIN the Phase 2 P90X2 workouts!

Changes I’m Making…

P90X2 HulkAs far as my goals for this round of P90X2, I think most of you know that I’m working to become the HULK. See my OPERATION X2 HULK post by clicking here for the low down.

The Phase 1 workouts weren’t conducive to adding lots of muscle mass (since it was tough to use heavy weight during the balance moves you’re doing), but this phase is perfect for adding size. So during this Phase of P90X2 I’ll be upping my calories like crazy, and focusing on lower reps and heavier weight.

During the first week of Phase 2 I was taking in 2,800 calories on the resistance workout days, 2,600 on the cardio days, and 2,300 on the yoga and rest days. However, I saw ZERO weight gain during that week so I decided to shift my strategy a bit.

If I want to hit my goal of adding at least 10 pounds during P90X2, then I need to up those calories even more so I’m adding at least 1 or more pounds a week of muscle.

So…

Moving forward I will be keeping things simple and taking in 2,900 calories EVERY day. Taking in that many calories a day isn’t easy for a dude like me, but I’m going to suck it up and work to hit that number every day with HEALTHY calories (not junk).

I’ll also really need to track my body fat closely to ensure I don’t start gaining fat. I may even find out that I need to up my calories even MORE. I’ll just have to stick with this, track everything and see what happens.

That’s MY update, now it’s YOUR turn…

So you’ve got my update, now I want to hear how things are going for YOU! Leave a comment below and let me know what’s going on! I want to hear if you’ve been sticking with your workouts…how your nutrition is going. Also, share with us any positive results you’ve had.

So leave a comment below now and share with our community whats happening!

YO! Phase 1 of P90X2 is…Officially…DONE!!! I am SO fired up to be going into Phase 2! In this blog post I want to let you know how Phase 1 of P90X2 went, and then give you a quick recap on how Chest + Back + Balance went (my first workout of Phase 2).

How Did Phase 1 Of P90X2 Go?

I’ll be honest…the first week of Phase 1 of P90X2 was pretty frustrating. Why? Because I was doing BRAND new moves that involved a TON of balance (a MAJOR weakness of mine). So during the workouts I was doing lots of pausing and rewinding, pausing and rewinding, so I could learn the new moves. As a result of having to do that I felt like I wasn’t getting as good of a workout as I usually do.

P90X2 Plyocide is a good example…it felt a lot easier then the original P90X plyometrics.

Then…

Week 2 and week 3 rolled around. I new the moves, so I could go through the workouts without having to stop a million times. At that point I was able to go full throttle with the workouts and I felt the TWO in P90X2. My reps started to consistently increase, and I was able to add more weight to the moves that involved weight.

I also started to see some pretty big improvements in my balance by week 4 and 5. Moves that I could only do 1 or 2 reps like…

  • Balance Kickback on Stability Ball, Mule Kick Burpee in X2 Total Body,
  • Renegade Row Lolasana in X2 Balance + Power,
  • etc.

I was now able to do 8, 10, or more reps depending on the move.

Lastly, wherever I could, I made sure to wear my weighted vest to increase the resistance (I’m now up to about 47 pounds in my weighted vest).

So I spent 5 weeks total in Phase 1 of P90X2. The first 2 weeks was my “unofficial” start of P90X2…I was just trying to get the moves down, and then 3 weeks of going full throttle. After 5 weeks I felt pretty comfortable with the moves, so I felt it was time to move on to Phase 2!

Chest + Back + Balance – Day 1, Phase 2

All I gotta say after doing Chest + Back + Balance is…WOW! :-) THIS is my kind of workout! You’re basically doing a million different varieties of push ups and pull ups. You’ll be using your med balls and the stability balls A LOT during this workout.

I’m not going to give away much in this post on Chest + Back + Balance because I want to do a full separate review on it in another post. BUT…I did want to let you know that there is a move that involves 4 medicine balls, and 1 that involves 3 medicine balls. I only have (2) 8 pounds medicine balls so I just used what I had, but I will be going out and buying 2 more so I can do the extreme version of these moves.
